Building Your Distance Ladder
You need three swings with each wedge:
- Half swing (hands to hip height)
- Three-quarter swing (hands to chest height)
- Full swing (complete backswing)
The Ladder Protocol
For each wedge in your bag (PW, GW, SW, LW):
- Hit 10 balls with your half swing. Discard the longest and shortest. Average the remaining 8. That's your half-swing number.
- Repeat for three-quarter and full swings.
- Record all distances.

When you have 88 yards to the pin, don't try to manufacture a custom swing. Look at your chart: that's a three-quarter gap wedge. Commit to the swing length, pick your target, and execute.
Maintenance Practice
Revisit your ladder every 2–3 weeks. Distances shift with temperature, altitude, fatigue, and equipment wear. Spend 15 minutes re-calibrating — it's the highest-ROI practice you can do.
Pro Tip: The Clock System
Think of your backswing as a clock. 9 o'clock = half swing. 10:30 = three-quarter. 12 o'clock = full. This mental image makes it easier to replicate swing lengths under pressure.
